Kolkata: Police bust fake call centers, 20 arrested

The Bengal Express: The detective department arrested 20 persons, including the owner of two illegal call centers operating from Fairlie Place and Netaji Subhas Road. Fake call centers scammed people by offering them easy loans. Among the accused were former bank employees who lost their jobs.

This is the fourth time bogus call centers have been busted in the Dalhousie area. The raids on Rising Solutions, located at 4, Fairlie Place and 14, Netaji Subhas Road, were carried out on Thursday afternoon. Three CPUs, monitors, 60 landlines, 18 mobile phones and some registers were seized before they were sealed, Joint CP (Crime) Murlidhar Sharma informed.

The call center staff would offer loans and once the victim agreed, they would ask for an amount as an insurance fee and processing fees. After receiving it, they would not provide the loan or return the amount to the victim.

"On an average, they cheated one person for Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh. We have registered a case under criminal conspiracy, cheating and cheating of the IPC and some stringent sections of the IT Act," Sharma said.
